Welcome to the World, Baby Rhino

Rolling Hills Zoo is excited to announce the birth of a male southern white rhinoceros calf, born on February 8, 2026.

Mom, Evey (19), and baby are doing well and bonding, while animal care staff monitor them from a respectful distance.

Evey arrived at Rolling Hills Zoo in 2020, and the calf’s father, Kengele (27), joined in 2024. Their pairing was recommended by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan (SSP), which helps ensure healthy, sustainable populations in accredited zoos.

At this time, the Rhino Barn is closed to allow mom and calf quiet bonding time. Staff are entering only when necessary and are monitoring the pair by camera.

Southern white rhinos are the second-largest land mammals and, while once brought back from near extinction, they still face serious threats from poaching. This calf represents an important step in protecting the future of the species.

Rolling Hills Zoo will share updates, photos, and information about future public viewing as the calf continues to grow and thrive.

RHINO BARN IS CLOSED

We know that everyone is so excited and eager with anticipation to see our new little guy.

Unfortunately, we don’t have an exact date as to when the public will be able to view our rhino calf.

We’ll share updates on our social media, so follow us to be the first to know when we announce that Rhino Barn is open for viewing.

Right now, it’s crucial that we protect this special bonding period for mom and baby. This precious time allows them to connect and adjust without the added stimulation of guests and extra noise.

We truly appreciate your patience as we give them the best possible start.
